The 16 Funniest Fake Bands of All Time

Posted: 26 Jun 2009 10:11 AM PDT

If there's one thing we like better than a good band, it's a really funny fake band. From metal to rap to folk, we've seen them all.

What good is music if it can't laugh at itself? And if it can't laugh at itself, someone else has to. In honor of this tradition, and the new Spinal Tap album, we bring you The 16 Funniest Fake Bands of All Time.

 Milli Vanilli
Looking back, we can even see how bad their lip-synching was. Milli Vanilli makes this list for pulling off their joke on the whole world and the Grammys. Now that's funny!

 Bad News
The cast of The Comic Strip is better known from their days on the BBC comedy The Young Ones. The funniest thing about Bad News is that people thought they were a real band. They even played the Monsters of Rock. Check out Joe Elliott from Def Leppard blasting Bad News. That's even funnier than the band, themselves.

 Mitch & Mickey
Christopher Guest is the undisputed king of movie spoofs. From heavy metal to dog shows to local civic theater, Guest has lampooned it all. His spoof on folk music, A Mighty Wind? Golden.

The Party Posse
Bart Simpson and his friends get duped into becoming Navy recruiters in an episode of the Simpsons. "What's Superliminal?" "Hey you, join the Navy!" Classic.

Scrantonicity
Kevin is the most underrated character on The Office. We'd hire Scrantonicity to rock our wedding.

 The Rutles
One of the very first spoof bands, The Rutles were a group of guys from Monty Python. They even went so far as to make a Beatle-esque film, All You Need is Cash. The Rutles paved the way for all the spoof comedy to come.

 F@ck You Yankee Blue Jeans
We never get to see the full band, but F@ck You Yankee Blue Jeans is the name of Silent Bob's cousin's band from Clerks. Many a woman has been unsuccessfully wooed with their song "Berserker".

 Fingerbang
Like the Simpsons, the South Park kids had their own boy band sensation, at least in Eric Cartman's mind.

(Tie) Diamonds in the Rough and Sonic Death Monkey/Barry Jive and the Uptown Five
Very few have quite the comedic music body of work that Jack Black does. From his real band, Tenacious D., to School of Rock, it was hard to pick just one. So we didn't. Here's the Neil Diamond cover band from Saving Silverman, and the various incarnations of his band from High Fidelity.

CB4
The movie that secured Chris Rock's legend beyond SNL. If all gangsta rap was this funny, there would be no drive bys. Everyone would be way too busy laughing.

The Blues Brothers
The Blues Brothers are the only group on this list besides Milli Vanilli to be nominated for a Grammy. Proving that life is funnier than art, The Blues Brothers aren't the band that won one.

Alice Bowie
Cheech and Chong's band from their movie Up in Smoke. "Earache my eye" still stands as one of the funniest songs in history.

Sexual Chocolate
Remember when Eddie Murphy was still funny? Oh well, they can never take away the Sexual Chocolate.

Spinal Tap
Was there ever any doubt? They're the only fake band to have a comeback. Every single spoof movie will be compared to This is Spinal Tap. Welcome back, boys, we've turned it up to 11 for you.
