8 Internet Memes That Just Won't Die Posted: 25 Jul 2009 05:14 AM PDT ![]() Back when the Hamster Dance - a series of animated hamsters dancing to Roger Miller's "Whistle Stop" - hit the Internet in 1998, few people thought it would be the first of a slew of Internet memes that bounce around our collective consciousness with little hope of escape. Here are eight more Internet memes that we can't seem to get rid of to this day... ![]() I'll admit it. I never thought LOLCats, which first became a sensation in 2007, would last that long. Yet these images of cats in human situations accompanied by LOLCat speak (i.e. I'm in ur bed, zleeping) just won't die. ![]() Poor Rick Astley. The pop star probably thought his 1987 single "Never Gonna Give You Up" was ancient history until some 4chan pranksters decided to revive it in a bait-and-switch meme that involves the user clicking on a link they think takes them one place, but in reality sends them to Astley's music video of the song. One example: On April Fools Day in 2008, YouTube sent anyone who clicked on their featured vidoes to Astley's song. ![]() This meme/series of fake factoids about Chuck Norris riffs on the idea that the "Walker, Texas Ranger" star is an all-powerful being. The meme has been around since 2006, when a Chuck Norris Facts generator was added to a World of Warcraft add-on. ![]() Ever seen MTV's "Pimp My Ride"? Then you know that the series host, Xhibit, has a habit of putting absurd objects in "pimped" cars - like fireplaces, fishtanks and clothes driers. Hence we have the "Sup Dawg/Yo Dawg" meme, which involves the general formula of "(Yo dawg/sup dawg), I herd you like X, so I put an X in your Y so you can Verb while you Verb. An example: "Yo dawg, I herd you liek shredding so I put a saw blade in yo guitar so u can shred while u shred." This meme has been lingering since 2007. ![]() Who would have thought that Hitler could be so funny? This meme, which has been kicking around the Internet for at least two years, takes a scene of Hitler freaking out from the German movie "Downfall" and inserts goofy subtitles related to current events. Recently, Hitler has been seen breaking down over the real estate downfall, Sarah Palin's failed run for vice president, and Windows Vista issues. ![]() This meme plasters the phase "I see what you did there" over pictures where the subject has either done something really clever, thinks they have done something really clever, or has done something really, really dumb. Sources say the meme started on the cult FOX hit "Futurama", but no one is sure. In any case, this meme can be spotted in Digg comments almost every day. ![]() Apparently, people really love watching cats do curiously human-like things. Enter Keyboard Cat, a video uploaded to YouTube in 2007 by performance artist Charlie Schmidt. The video features a cat, well, playing the keyboards. Now snippets of the video are interspliced into every manner of uncomfortable situation to be found on YouTube. One hilarious example: keyboard cat inserted into Miss Teen South Carolina's awkward speech. ![]() Miss Teen South Carolina Miss Teen South Carolina's 2007 pageant speech is a meme unto itself. The video clip, which shows Caitlin Upton answering the question of why a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map, has become a sensation thanks to Upton's utterly incoherent response: "I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh..." etc. Amazingly, the clip is still hilarious (to some people, at least) two years later.
